Customer Reviews
More functionality than configuration.....yet a good book
Just finished going through the entire book in very much detail...I will have to admit that martin's book is worth 4 stars BUT no more than that. I have my reasons for doing so.
Pro's.
1. This book summarizes the SAP MM functionality in a very good way. Till now the SAP MM area was pretty much starved of any good book.
2. Almost all of his chapters have step-by-step instructions----with screen shots for most of the important steps. This ensures that this book will get used by both the MM user and the consultant that configures the application.
3. A detailed index and a glossary make this book more useful...Although the glossary is towards the end of the book, I found that it was very helpful to go through the glossary before reading the book.
Cons
1. When it comes to the Technical configuration part...this book is not very helpful. To the consultant, the book shows the path to configuring the system...but How? and Why? should the configuration be done is not explained properly....This will definitely get the newcomer or midlevel consultant confused and will make him look out for more expert help.
2. SAP is a very relational application. An incorrect config in one module effects other modules too. This books lacks in its explanation of the 'effects of a configuration being done.'
3. Finally..some important configs have not been explained properly...like 'Pricing Condition technique in MM Purchasing' and 'Release Procedure setup for Documents'.
Over all, this book is a good purchase for the MM user and the newcomer (consultant) coz it explains the MM functionality in a good way.
A Great Reference Book for Materials Management
I was pleasantly surprised to see a MM book out there that was going to tackle all aspects of Materials Management in one volume. I have been disappointed in other books published on the subject so I was very pleased when I started reading it and finding that it actually was structured and had all the subjects in it that I wanted to find out about. Some of it was a bit below me, but I think that is great for consultants new to MM. Other parts I had to read over a few times to get it, like Material Ledger, so this book as it all. There are quite a few examples and some great configuration tips just when you need them. It's good that the book is written by an American as is refreshing to not to see everything focused on Germany. The real life examples are from all over the globe.
Overall I was very pleased. A good solid book on Materials Management.
Guidance for the real-world from a real-world expert
When selecting books of this nature I prefer books that are not designed to influence you to purchase software or components, but those that give you a helping hand to solve the problems you do have with configuring it for your own use and realising the benefits that first attracted to you to SAP.
This book does exactly what it sets out to do - working from a clear overview of the MM module at the beginning to some much more detailed sections where you need it. I particularly enjoyed some of the real-life examples - and would recommend them - for me it brought the subject to life and prompted my own thinking on how to use MM to greatest effect.
I also appreciated the fact that the book acknowledges that the MM module does not operate in a vacuum -the book will help me realise the seamless integration of MM with other modules.
Overall, this is a practical, helpful guide to MM, which strikes the balance between technical detail and practical application. I'd recommend it.
